One Hand Washes the Other
The exhibition One Hand Washes the Other is the first of a series of projects looking at the interconnections between Canadian art and resource extraction.
This particular exhibition and associated gestures took place at Struts Gallery in Sackville, New Brunswick. Gold mining financier Pierre Lassonde had recently given a large donation to Sackville’s Mount Allison University’s art department, thereby renaming the school as the Pierre Lassonde School for the Arts. The exhibition addressed the conditions of the donation, as well as the ways that it determined how the money should be spent, looking at the ways that funding from wealth begotten from resource extraction distorts what critical materials can be taught and which art forms are valued.
