work > Audience Engagement

A project developed as part of The House of Dust exhibition in Paris through the Art by Translation program.

This work was part of a group exhibition reflecting on the heritage of Fluxus in which several of the other artists’ works invited participation by the visiting public.

Schwebel’s project was to employ a work-force of ‘activators’ to whom he paid a minimum wage. Their task was to visit the exhibition each day and to ‘activate’ the works of the other artists. By way of this transaction, the concept of participatory art is transformed from naïve engagement into waged labour and back again.
