Médiation Culturelle
This work was created at the FRAC Lorraine in Metz, France, where I was invited to create new work as part of the exhibition Ressources Humaines curated by Virginie Jourdain. The exhibition was organized around issues of cultural labour.
I began the project by speaking with the médiatrices (the exhibition mediators). Their job at the gallery is to accompany the exhibition, interfacing between the art and the public. In an exhibition whose curatorial theme was "human resources," and whose political axis was a queer-feminist, non-hierarchical approach, I was interested to learn about the working conditions offered by the FRAC to these young women, and how the structural impositions of internal hierarchies to which the mediatrices were subjected in turn undermined or frustrated the curatorial and assumed-to-be-reflected position of the gallery management.
I speak about this project in greater detail in an interview with La Belle Revue.
The work is also discussed by Dominique Sirois-Rouleau in her article, published in Esse Magazine, From Self-Exploitation to Collective Accountability.
