Please Do Not Submit Original Works
I submitted an exhibition proposal to a Montreal artist-run centre using the name, CV, and portfolio of a well-known Canadian artist (Micah Lexier). Accompanying this submission was a project proposal written in Lexier's name. This was an act of impersonation and appropriation, using the published documents of another artist without the artist's knowledge or permission.
After a 2 month deliberation period in which the dossier was evaluated amongst the over 200 other submissions for that years' 4 programming openings, the imposter-submission was offered an exhibition. Once I received this information, I wrote letters to the jury and board of the artist's run centre, disclosing and explaining my purpose, and a separate letter to Lexier himself.
Amber Berson wrote about this work in la revue esse in their Fall 2014 issue, "Spectacle".
